junclassic, J Slikk - junSlikk
If You know my catalog, 8x out of 10 I shout out the producer on the track. What would HipHop be without the producer? This project is dedicated to a special one. I have worked with one of Chi Town’s Finest, the Low key Legend known as J Slikk, since 2009. What I love about J Slikk’s sound is not only the warm and murky sample choices, but also the knock in his kicks, the boom in his basslines, and the snap in his snares. J’s beats pulsate and thump in a way that harkens back to that Golden Era moodiness. His beats sound like they have mud on them, giving them a grimey smoothness that leaves a lasting impression.
J Slikk might be related to Rick James. His soulful, funky influence is distinctive and heartfelt. And, as You play this project, J has a penchant for creating cool, colorful instrumental interlude splashes that gives the project a more soulful, cinematic experience. This is the type of project where You press play and let it ride.
Fans of Black Moon’s Enta da Stage, Tribe Called Quest’s Midnight Maurauders, Gangstarr’s Moment of Truth, and J Dilla’s Welcome to Detroit may get an audio kick out of this collection of dope tunes ranging back 15 years, with two new tracks at the beginning. Lyrically, junclassic touches on a range of topics, including the ups and downs of being an indie artist, Black pride, police brutality, grief from personal loss, overcoming that loss and believing in the dream even when life feels like a living nightmare. There is a youthful enthusiasm in jun’s voice in these tracks that is palatable and infectious.
