As my 2024 collaborative LP, ‘BLIP,’ with The Expert moved from mix and master toward pressing and release, I needed an outlet for my nervous energy. I had just gone big and the wait was killing me, so I decided it was time to go home. ‘Secret Pancake’ is NAHreally left to his own devices. Drums first, sample next (mostly) then I followed the rhymes where they led me. I eschewed second guessing as a balm for self-consciousness and made only what came naturally.

The result is light and buttery, syrupy at times, and the process felt mitochondrial—I just had to make these pancakes. A title presented itself, 14 songs were cut down to 10, and the internet gods gifted me the clips that punctuate the album. I was delighted to finally find a chance to collaborate with Meechy718 (one of my oldest rap friends) on “Sims,” and I couldn’t hear anyone other than Jesse the Tree (your favorite rap friend’s favorite rap friend) on “Left With A Sense.” From there, two longtime collaborators, Chris Payne and Michael Stone, mixed the batter, shaped the flapjacks, and applied the butter and syrup.

On ‘Secret Pancake,’ I kept it simple and cooked up with whatever was in reach. As for the full recipe? I’m afraid that must remain a secret.
