Napoleon Da Legend - Dessalines

Jean-Jacques Dessalines was a key leader of the Haitian Revolution and the first ruler of independent Haiti. Born into slavery around 1758, he rose through the military ranks under Toussaint Louverture. After Louverture’s capture, Dessalines led the final fight against French forces, defeating them in 1803. Fiercely committed to ending slavery, he declared Haiti’s independence in 1804 and became its first emperor. He sought to secure Black sovereignty and punish former colonizers, ordering the 1804 massacre of remaining French settlers. Though controversial, Dessalines is revered as a founding father of Haiti. He was assassinated in 1806, but his revolutionary legacy endures.
