Rapswell, SQ - I Like Killing Flies

Another album, another tribute to a legendary figure. I Like Killing Flies inhabits the world of Kenny Shopsin, the owner of the diner Shopsin’s General Store and true New York City character. Named after the documentary of the same name that follows Kenny around while he makes his signature mac n cheese pancakes and waxes philosophical about the meaning of life - highly recommended viewing! Clips from the doc are strewn throughout the project, and you can quickly hear the type of robust personality the man was known for.

It’s a story of a lost world, an old school mentality that prefers passion over practicality and profit. This is a world that Rapswell can relate to, as he continues to craft meticulous main courses over SQ’s succulent soundtracks. From the jump, Swell lets you know where he’s coming from with the opener The MF’er, exploring the lower parts of the self that you can’t run away from in order to grow as a person, in the same way a Venus flytrap needs flies to thrive.

The food theme continues with Kimchi, Chimichangas, & Soufflé, with the latter bringing the album’s first guest Wavy Bagels, who tantalizes the track with a verse that will most definitely bring in all the best Yelp reviews. Other features include fellow PENPALS comrade Bobby Noble, the beloved junclassic (Rest in Power), and Queens own Marvolus Jay & Marcus Pinn on the song BDP. The closer Hiro Protagonist shows Rapswell’s distaste for the tech feudal lords currently wrecking havoc to our society, and the worst of them get dismantled thoroughly in his scathing and timely verses.

A welcome accompaniment to this year’s MAX POETICS (uddtba.bandcamp.com/album/max-poetics), I Like Killing Flies showcases how SQ and Swell get down in the kitchen. Bon appétit!
